description Lyme borreliosis is a relatively new human disorder, the causative agent was successfully isolated and identified by Willy Burgdorfer in 1982. However, many symptoms have been described in medical literature for more than a hundred years. During years of investigation many new mechanisms of the bacterium have been recognized, and the persistence of the organism, despite an intact host defence, is an enigma. There is a high risk of Borrelia burgdorferi dissemination to anatomic sites beyond the lesion site and, if the infection is not treated adequately with antibiotics, it may lead to a chronic multisystemic disorder which is difficult to cure. The organism is now called the new great imitator. There is a concern that many false-negative results may be reported, particularly in the early course of the disease or after antibiotic treatment. The use of different strains of Borrelia burgdorferi as antigen may also result in varying enzyme immunoassay (EIA) results. Therefore, diagnosing Lyme disease may often be a challenge, since it mainly is a clinical diagnosis and laboratory tests are only a support.
