| description | Archaeological research on the Sant’Appianu de Sagone site, begun in 1964, has been continued in an irregular manner, and sometimes pragmatically in the context of development projects threatening the cathedral. A new project emerged in 2007, the aims of which are to carry out a global study while enhancing the remains as a whole.The small coastal establishment, founded in the 1st century A.D., is elevated to the rank of bishopric before 591. A modest cathedral is built at this time, then rebuilt and restored several times until its transformation into an agricultural building in the early 19th century. The architectural study presented here accounts for this evolution and provides a novel image of these insular bishoprics with original destinies. |
