This article presents the model of compatibility in personal relationships through its components such as complemen- tarity and similarity. Diverse authors give greater or smaller importance to one or another component of compatibility. The compatibility of traits is effectuated at a micro level of a relationship, and is considered important in such areas as personality, values, roles and demographical aspect. Complementarity can be more important for the development of a relationship rather than the initial stage of attraction. A person with specific needs can search for those qualities in other persons, and find those persons more attractive. Similarity can be important because it maintains the balance or consistence in our relationships. Relationships are balanced when the positive and negative valences are in accordance.
