New data collected from excavations and archaeological surveys, or from documents, invite to write a history of the genesis and development of the ports in the Red Sea, from Antiquity to Islamic times. The three following contributions underline the major importance of local maritime networks in the constitution of the Red Sea as a cohesive economical area.
