description | The publication of the first Brazilian translation of La Recherche, which was also the first one in Portuguese, began at the end of 1949, thanks to a large-scale project launched by the Globo publishing house. In 1987, after several years of work, the poet Fernando Py published, with Ediouro, not only a new complete translation of La Recherche, but also the Portuguese version of the unfinished manuscripts Jean Santeuil and Contre Sainte-Beuve. In 2022, Mario Sergio Conti initiated the publication of the third complete translation of La Recherche in a partnership with Rosa Freire d'Aguiar, this time by Companhia das Letras. The choice of Procura do tempo perdido instead of the traditional Busca do tempo perdido symbolizes the effort to update and renew translations that, in their view, were beginning to age. This article presents the peculiarities of the three Brazilian versions of Proust's novel in Portuguese and discusses the reasons why this country has become one of the most fertile grounds for its translation. |
