| Summary: | Human and social sciences journals are prime places for disseminating current research and hence original articles. They also play a paradoxical role as regards translation, particularly in countries with widely used languages or, like France, with so called central languages. The movement of international researchers has certainly continued to increase but, although translating short articles for dissemination is, a priori, a straightforward and effective way to introduce foreign authors into other linguistic and geographical areas, translation still clearly occupies a marginal place in journals and its potential contribution to academia remains particularly undervalued. This paradox will be laid bare here through an examination of whether it is a core contradiction at play in the international dissemination of articles, albeit with major differences depending on the disciplines involved and the geographical areas covered by various publications. |
