Summary: | The paper deals with the role of the traditional wedding ceremony in the development of the conflict and the creation of the characters system in the drama of N. V. Gogol. In the comedy “Marriage” is traces the situation of wedding collision as a pre-wedding stage. A sequence of ritual acts of characters (matchmaking, bride-show, engagement) is noted. Roles of actors of the play refer to the functions of the participants of the wedding ceremony (groom, bride, matchmaker, groomsman). The individualizing behavior of characters, creating the comic effect, is notede. In the “The Government Inspector” the marriage motif is presented in the episode of blessing of the young. Imaginary preparing for the wedding is the part of the “mirage plot”. In both plays the marriage motif is the archetypal basis of the action as a whole (“Marriage”) or a single significant episode. All characters formally follow ceremonial actions, but are incapable to conform to their wedding roles because of their individual character or social status.The study discovers the role of the elements of a traditional wedding ritual in disclosing the artistic sense of the dramatic works of Gogol. |
