Description
Summary:The sacral topography of the Sočanica monastery is presented in this paper. The monastery is located at the foot of the Kopaonik Mountain, in the municipality of Leposavić. The church of the monastery was restored in the XIX century, and despite the fact their old history had remained absolutely unknown, it remained out of the interest of scholars. In such historiography situation, traditional stories remained as the only means of its relevance recognition in the life either in XIX century or today. Specific elements of its sacral topography appeared to be the important factors for the popularity of this monastery within local community. Among the main elements which shaped up this monastery, besides the church as the basic element, hiding place under the altar, hundreds of years old pine, and the spring of healing water that used to be in the vicinity, are located. The key fact in exploring these elements is the motive of miracle that is related to all of them, and which usually refers to healing. In that way the Sočanica monastery proves to be a great example of folk piety and faith among the Serbian population in rural region of Kosovo and Metohija.
