description This article aims to analyze the transformation of the meaning of the indigenous past in the twentieth century. We propose the hypothesis that this change is the effect of a passage between the form of narration of the national history and the historical memory. At first, we will make somehistoriographical considerations about the emergence of the category of historical memory. Later, we will reconstruct how, since the 1970s, the indigenous past in Mexico gained a tragic sense through a "memorialization" put into perspective with a nascent utopia of cultural plurality.
