description The present article resumes the analysis of the semiperipheral condition of the Portuguese economy initiated two and a half decades ago. In so doing it assumes the theoretical relevance and up-to-datedness of the concept of semiperiphery. It argues that the process of integration into the European Union has redefined the semiperipheral condition of the Portuguese economy, intensifying its peripheral position within Europe. Despite the transformation it went through, the Portuguese economy continues to be shaped by a deep heterogeneity and by imbalances, which the intermediate nature of its economic, social and political structures helps explaining. The most significant imbalance today derives from the insertion of the Portuguese economy in international financial circuits, ensuring the desired demand of core countries’ surpluses through the purchase credit that core countries also provide the periphery with.
