description The purpose of this paper is to analyse the development of a catholic Hispanoamericanism prior to the First World War through the case of the offering-up of Hispano-American flags to the Virgin of el Pilar. Latin-American Catholics started reappraising the Spanish spiritual heritage as a way to get over the revolutionary spirit of the Independence movements and to forge a national catholic discourse. Finally, the paper reflects on how the building of horizontal networks within catholic hierarchies all over the world contributed to the Romanisation of the Catholic Church.
