Description
Summary:

ABSTRACT: This paper examines the role of the ideology of Enlightenment in the province of Cádiz during the final years of the Ancient Régime, with particular reference to the Economic Societies of the Friends of the ?Country (Sociedades Económicas de Amigos del País). These institutions were archetypes oí the Spanish Enlightenment and were born with the purpose of serving as instruments for economic development and public welfare. The Economic Societies endeavoured to develop new forms of social communication and to be vehicles for the reformist policies of the state. However, they were conditioned, on the one hand, by the survival of a traditional, conservative mentality that strongly opposed these new ideas and, above all, by the vested interests of the local oligarchies, on whom they frequently depended for their creation and development. The initial results of the Economic Societies were poor. However, the arrival of Liberalism brought new life to these societies and an increase in their activities. On several occasions, they were the scene of struggles for power between the traditional oligarchy and the new liberal economic élite.
