Summary: | The conventional diagnostic tests for tuberculosis are usually unyielding and time-consuming. This is why the necessity to find new methods for early diagnosis with a high sensitivity and specificity emerges. Since many of these new technologies require expensive equipment and specialist training, it is unlikely that they will become widely established as routine techniques. The aim of this study is to investigate new technologies such as E-test and FAST Plaque TB-RIF in multidrug resistant cases which are promising to overcome these shortcomings. Twenty four Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex strains isolated from sputum of multi-resistant pulmonary tuberculosis patients and 12 sensitive strains, were studied by both agar proportion as standard method and new rapid (E-test for M. tuberculosis and FAST Plaque TB-RIF) methods to be compared in many aspects. In general, there were no significant differences between E-test and agar proportion method among multidrug resistant (MDR) cases in our study. Between agar proportion and E-test method, the sensitivity and specificity of E-test method for INH were 95.4% and 91.7% whereas for RIF 95.8% and 100% respectively. Rifampicin sensitivity in FAST Plaque method was found 88.2%. It is concluded that both methods may be suitable and supportive for resistant mycobacterial strains in routine practice due to their fast and easy applications. |
