description Through a rereading of historical sources and an analysis of modern historiography, this contribution reconstructs the hypothesis of some alleged contacts between Attila and Genseric, who would have lent mutual help to move their attacks on the Roman Empire. In order to demonstrate that the contacts, relationships and agreements in the barbaricum were much more subtle than can be deduced from reading the Greek and Latin sources, two specific episodes will be investigated. The first is Constantinople’s failure to attack Carthage in AD 441, for which various factors, including the Huns, have been called into question. The second episode concerns Attila’s attack on Gaul and Italy (451-452 AD), a moment during which the West found itself prostrated by a severe famine, perhaps caused by Genseric.
