description The Benedictine Pierre Grimaud (? - before 1674), from the monastery of Mas-Grenier, is the author of a life in verse of Saint Benedict, Le Dret cami del Cél, published in Toulouse in 1659. In some 12,000 lines divided into six books and 48 songs, the author is inspired by the Dialogues of Gregory the Great. Each episode of St Benedict's life is preceded by a section entitled “Mouralo”, explaining how Christians should interpret the different moments of the saint's exemplary life. The biographical account contains vast scenes of a very baroque aesthetic that today might be described as burlesque. Stylistically, Grimaud is following the Toulouse poet Pierre Godolin (1580-1649), to whom he implicitly pays tribute. This similarity to Godolin's work establishes a link of proximity and familiarity with the reader, intended to facilitate the assimilation of the post-Tridentine religious and moral message.
