Description
Summary:The author discusses Jan Ciepliński’s book Szkic dziejów baletu polskiego [A Draft History of Polish Ballet], which is based on documents passed on to him by Leopold Filatyn and partly published by Henryk Liński in the second volume of the monograph Taniec [Dance] (ed. Mateusz Gliński, Warsaw, 1930), and supplemented by Ciepliński’s own investigations. The reviewer points out the main faults of the book: the absence of references to primary or secondary sources, the lack of structural periodisation desirable in overviews of this kind, and the absence or insufficient scope of critical analysis. The central part of the review addresses factual errors. An important point of criticism is also that due to personal motivations, Ciepliński was unfair in describing the activity of his contemporary dancers and choreographers, as well as the Polish Representative Ballet. Given the unsatisfactory quality of the book, which was published in London, the reviewer feels urged to emphasize the gaps in the domestic publishing market in the field of dance history and theory.
