Summary:The essay examines the relationship between Ruggero Ruggeri and Hamlet. During the years of the First World War, in the period of his full artistic maturity, Ruggeri created a theatrical edition of the Shakespearean text (1915) and then a film (1917). The analysis of the two moments makes it possible to focus on some characteristics of Ruggeri’s artistic career and to highlight the “foundational” character of this period in the history of Italian theatre.
