Summary:This article deals with the development and implementation of a long-term strategy of the organization of independent work of undergraduate and graduate students by means of a foreign language, which allows designing a vector for further professional and personal development of the future specialist. The proposed strategy is based on a four-step approach, providing for the integration of communication means of training and information technology, streamlining effective means and forms of implementation of the independent work and the control, strengthening the relationships between a student and a teacher, the principle of continuity and consistency. The methods of theoretical and empirical studies were used; there were described the stages of the approach, that is the basis of the strategy itself. Based on the stages, the sequence of the controlled independent work systematic elements was defined; its forms and types were grouped and specified. The mastery performance criteria for competence in the discipline “Foreign language” were defined and refined. The authors cite data of the experimental studies proving the positive impact of the implementation of the long-term strategy of the organization of independent work of students on formation of professional foreign language competence.
