description In Plato’s Symposium, several elements of the dramatization are going, as it were, to isolate Socrates and oppose him to the rest of the gathering. In book 2 of Republic during the progressive establishment of the city-state, tables, “table-couches” and elaborate dishes indicate the passage from one to another way of life. The first one is the frugal way of life of the “authentic city-state” where men wine and dine lying on straw mattresses. The second one is the wealthy way of life of the “luxurious city-state” before it becomes a “beautiful city-state” also known as Plato’s kallipolis. I thus wish to question here these elements that, far from being background details with no significance, are indicators of the conception and the image that Plato had of the philosopher within the city-state.
