| Summary: | The International Summer Courses of New Music in Darmstadt constituted one of the most important centers for contemporary music after World War II. Since their beginnings in 1946, some Latin American composers participated in the courses. This article embraces the presence of South American music between 1949 and 1951, relating to the participation of German composer and flutist Hans-Joachim Koellreutter, who set in Brazil in 1937. Koellreutter played an interesting role in Darmstadt in his double condition as agent of the German musical culture in Brazil and as exponent of South American music in Germany. The article explores Koellreutter’s own speeches about Brazilian and South American music, the performance of some Brazilian works and his participation in the International Dodecaphonic Congresses. These experiences have contributed to strengthen his identification with twelve-tone music, and this local projection as the initiator of dodecaphonic music in Brazil. |
