Summary: | This article is about a novel which was published in 1907, L’Invasion. Louis Bertrand, the author, presented the reader with a collection of xenophobic and racist clichés about Italian immigrants in Marseilles, who accounted for one fifth of the town’s population at the time. But the novel expresses the fear not only of the « invasion » of French territory by strangers, but also of the spread of ideas which Bertrand, as a nationalist extremist and an anti-democrat, deemed dangerous for the good, respectful and hard-working people. |
