| Summary: | In the creation of a literary work, especially a novel, the theme of the story and the style of the author's imagination is of great importance. In Hadrien's Memoirs, which can be regarded as one of the prominent works of the second half of the 20th century, the author has recreated historical events with the help of her imagination, and based on her own concerns. In addition to enumerating and analyzing some prominent features of this literary work, this essay tries to illuminate the point that Yourcenar has revived her ancestors' traditions by returning to a traditional structure and using historical contents, and has created a modern literature under the name of "Fantasy Literature" by combining history with her feminine imagination. Thus, the writer of this essay attempts to answer these questions: Is Hadrien's Memoirs a historical novel or an imaginative one? In a period when most authors chose the theme of modern age for their works, what might be Yourcenar’s purpose in dealing with historical events? |
