description While the phrase of reading “the signs of the times” has been labeled as a motto of Vatican II, its methodology is, to say the least, controversial. The “who,” “what,” “when,” and “how” of interpreting the signs – with and through which God acts in the world and continues to reveal Himself – are fraught with debate in this postmodern world. Examining some historical case studies is helpful in offering some useful criteria in offering a sound “reading”: remaining rooted in Tradition, paying attention to human experience (especially the vulnerable), possessing displibilitá (a willingness to engage), humility, and solidarity. When reading the signs of the times with these criteria in mind, conversation about the church-world relationship can bear substantive fruit.
