Summary: | An increasing impact of plant biotechnology on society is present in all over the world. Scientific understanding should be developed on people so they can be able to make right personal decisions and participate in public debate about this technology and processes carried out. Cuba has several field trials on transgenic plants that are on experimental level, but they are not yet commercially available. Anything has been published regarding understanding of Cuban people about biotechnologies and advice towards plant transgenesis. What people think and their perception about this technology must be known. Evaluation of people knowledge about these topics through out a survey in order to prepare information material regarding benefits and warnings of plant biotechnology was the aim of this study. Most of the people surveyed (86%) had read about this technology, but they can not explain its basics. Three main societal groups were identified: intellectuals, students and farmers, which had different points of view related to plant biotechnology. Five conferences were planned based on these results to help people to understand and at the same time to debate about plant biotechnology.
