Summary: | Background: In recent years, Moringa oleifera commonly known as a drumstick has emerged as a powerful neuroprotectant plant. This trend has opened new avenues for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases and cognitive impairments. In traditional medicines, it is used to treat many neurological disorders and is highly effective in Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, Huntington's, diseases, epilepsy, and neurotoxicity. In addition, the plant possesses significant antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which further enhance its neuroprotective potential. Purpose: This review aims to highlight the increasing neuroprotective potential of the Moringa plant in controlling and management of neurological problems. Study design: A comprehensive analysis was done on all relevant reports to extract information specifically related to the neuroprotectant and antioxidant potential. To collect the relevant reports, we conducted a search using various keywords such as Moringa oleifera, phytochemical composition, neuroprotective properties, neurodegenerative diseases, the role of oxidative stress, and antioxidants in neurological disorders. Methods: To collect relevant articles, research papers, communications, and reviews we explored various web sources mainly public databases Google Scholar, PubMed, Science Direct, Scopus, and Web of Science. Results: An analysis of 120 reports revealed that Moringa plant has neuroprotective properties that may be useful in various neurodegenerative disorders and central nervous system dysfunctions. Additionally, these reports show the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, phenolics, terpenoids, steroids, glycosides, saponins, and coumarins in different parts of the plant. These phytoconstituents are strongly correlated with the neuroprotective and antioxidant effects. Conclusion: Moringa phytochemicals offer promises for the development of complementary or alternative neurotherapy for the treatment of neurological disorders and cognitive impairments.
