description Although the year 1989 was an important milestone in the field of political and social affairs, the new situation in literature did not immediately bring new topics or changes of poetics. However, works of art which reflected on totalitarianism and the inner freedom of an individual were gradually created. Reviews of the ideology in Slovak literature of the period of time in question have two basic forms: 1. The traumas of history and the analysis of the evil; namely the social evil, the system-related evil, as well as the personal, individual evil (J. Johanides, L. Grendel, P. Vilikovský), while the authors build the awareness of moral responsibility (J. Johanides), mock the emptiness (L. Grendel) and ironically reflect on the scepticism caused by the state of the world and the human being (P. Vilikovský). 2. Ironic reflections on the official interpretation of history, mocking transcription (P. Hrúz) or imitation (P. Vilikovský) of it. The subject of the mocking is “the hollow language of the totalitarian ideology” (P. Vilikovský), as well as pettiness, nationalism and bourgeois thinking (L. Grendel, P. Hrúz). A new post-ideological view of history makes use of the construction principle of bricolage, where a new meaningful and functional whole is created by joining originally incompatible elements and by inten-tionally changing and blending various literary techniques. Within the context of epic confrontation of big history and little people stories, the authors question and relativize the the ruling ideology’s only and binding interpretation of the world of that time. A frequent construc-tion base is a narration of the same story seen from several character perspectives (J. Juráňová) or a multiple covering of one topic in the course of time (D. Šimko). There is repeatedly found a child perspective narration, which multiplies the already distorted image of the times affected by the ideological deformations. There is an apparent tendency to grasp the dramatic aspect of modern Slovak history within a wider time frame (J. Juráňová, P. Rankov). It can be said that Slovak literature after 1989 did not give up on telling big stories, in fact after the initial exploration it rediscovered them. The legacy of the ideology and the process of coming to terms with it has become the common ground of th new big narrations.
