description | On the basis of an important series of indications it is very likely Apollonius’ Cyzicus episode touched upon all of the historical matierial available at the time, from temple archives to the accounts of epichoric poets, in the attempt to recover the most ancient traditional memories of the place. So it would seem to follow that in this episode of the Argonautica he used not only simple pieces of information, but a hexameter text that he might himself have partially developed for an essentially different editorial project, perhaps a Foundation of Cyzicus. A specific selection of variants was therefore necessary not only to reconcile the epichoric myths relative to the history of Cyzicus with the Argonautica epic, but also to disentangle the various versions, both written and oral, relating to the epic narrative of Heracles that was connected with the area of Cyzicus. Here the critical and intellectual competence of Apollonius particularly come forth, whereas it is the genius exclusively of Apollonius the poet to have known to make the Cyzicus sojourn a crucial turning-point in both journey and narrative. While Heracles is on the threshold of being abandoned in Mysia in the following episode, this scene proves, though the inescapable sacrality of the oracles, that of Apollo concerning Cyzicus, but also implicitly the expedition’s initial oracle, that divine will has complete authority in making Jason sole leader for the success of the enterprise. |
