Description
Summary:Physical activities, especially sports, represent specific moments in social life, and this is reflected in language through specific terms and usages. In the case of Brittany, wrestling tournaments (Breton wrestling, or gouren) are characterised on the one hand by the formalisation in oral and written language and literature of both a narrative sequence and a system of actants, which are marked by a symbolic association with the animal world (notably the ram, or le maout), and on the other by a parallel between the competition outcome and the real/symbolic competition between the categories ‘wet’ and ‘dry’, hence the title ‘Gleb’, meaning ‘wet’ in Breton.
