In the case of Brittany, wrestling tournaments (Breton wrestling, or gouren) are characterised on the one hand by the formalisation in oral and written language and literature of both a narrative sequence and a system of actants, which are marked by a symbolic association with the animal world (notably the ram, or le maout), and on the other by a parallel between the competition outcome and the real/symbolic competition between the categories ‘wet’ and ‘dry’, hence the title ‘Gleb’, meaning ‘wet’ in Breton. |
