Summary: | The effect of intumescent flame retardant, melamine pyrophosphate (MPP)/pentaerythritol (PER) on the flame retardancy, thermal stability, carbon residue morphology and mechanical properties of natural rubber (NR) vulcanizates were studied. The results showed that MPP/PER had a good flame retardant effect on NR vulcanizates, and could effectively improve limiting oxygen index and thermal stability of NR vulcanizates, reduce the heat release rate of NR vulcanizates, and stabilize the combustion process of NR vulcanizates. When MPP/PER was burned, a continuous expanding and dense carbon layer which could isolate oxygen and heat would be formed on the surface of NR vulcanizates. The increase in the total addition amount of MPP/PER would have a certain negative effect on mechanical properties of NR vulcanizates.
