Description
Summary:The transition to democracy and the consolidation were generally explained by processes conditioned by the former communist structures (the path dependency theory), or by processes determined by the competition between recent political actors (the competition theory). The wide differences in the consolidation of democracy in the region forced many scholars to consider other relevant factors. The cultural factors have been neglected for a long period of time, but Putnams research on democratic performance in the early 90s in terms of social capital revivified the debate. We intend in this research paper to estimate the importance of these cultural factors for the peoples support for democracy. We find out that social capital is not at all a predictor for the support for democracy, contrary to the expectations derived from the social capital theory when compared to several other factors.
