description | This article focuses on “Senior Star”, a music contest restricted to Canadian citizens 65 and older. Organized and financed by Chartwell, the largest network of residences for the elderly in Canada, this contest aims at « celebrating the talent of retirees ». The fruit of a pilot project carried out in the manner of a multi-site ethnography, this study explores how “Senior Star”, as an event situated at the crossroads of music, medias and the booming elderly housing market, highlights particular articulations of “aging well” in Quebec. We suggest that “Senior Star” acts as a mediation of “successful ageing”, as a distinct form of “aging well”, while insisting on the issues raised by a public testing of ageing. Herein we shall examine two methods which confer a collective character on successful ageing: the public experience and a shared engagement. This contest-show is an ideal terrain for learning how active ageing deploys outside the domains of health and security. |
