Summary:The objective of this paper is to present a panorama on the education of the deaf, analyzing the historical and social context from the ancient times to the present day. The history of the deaf and their education strengthens the idea that this community experiences important achievements, although many challenges persist. Knowing about the deaf difference and facts of the history of the deaf are fundamental to legitimize and give prestige to the deaf person as a human difference and thus avoid the tragedies of the past. The deaf are citizens and have the right to education in sign language. The access to knowledge enables the deaf to reach higher educational, professional and social levels, in order to guarantee the right to participation, independence and autonomy.
