description The western facade of Saint-Denis has been drawing attention since its recent restoration. Today, all eyes are focused on the planned « reassembly » of a spire on the north tower. Surprisingly little information remains about this structure, which was dismantled in an emergency by François Debret in 1837. The recent observations on the stone deposit that is supposed to have come from this spire, raise more questions than they provide answers about its medieval building methods, just as the textual and iconographic archives produced in the 19th century. In the same way, the renewal of previously accepted dates come up against by stylistic, material and structural arguments. Archaeological examination can thus distinguish between restoration, reconstruction, restitution and construction.
