description | Maximon is a religious figure with an ambiguous status –between God and saint- emanating from the brotherhood system of Santiago Atitlan, municipality of the west Guatemala in which the population is essentially composed of Maya Tzutuhil peasants. During Holy Week Maximon is the central element of agricultural fertility rituals. This time of renewal corresponds with the period during which the Catholics celebrate the Christ’s resurrection and the end of the dry season in this area and the “Uayeb” of the Ancient Mayas. In this article, the author analyses the relationship between the people and their deity during this time, while focusing her attention on the tropical fruit offering and its preparation, and underlining its sexual and food dimension. |
