| Summary: | Prince Karl Heinrich zu Lôwenstein, a prominent member of the uppermost strata of Germany's aristocracy, took over the institutions of the German Catholic Congresses in 1868. ln this capacity, he tried to use them as a tool to promote a brand of social Catholicism, quite distinct from both socialism and capitalism. He also meant to weigh in on the Zentrum party, which he saw as too accommodating with the authorities. Yet his unconditional support for the Pope led him to break away from the Zentrum and from his alliance with episcopal power. He stepped down from the presidence of the German Catholic Congresses in 1898. He then progressively moved away from political life and eventually entered the Dominican Order. |
