description THE SIGNIFICANT INCREASE IN THE NUMBER OF SPANISH UNIVERSITIES.A SPATIAL NETWORK FACED WITH FUTURE REORGANIZATION DIFFICULTIES. The number of university students in Spain underwent a very significant increase between 1970 and 2000, from 156 000 to 1 581 000. However, their number has been falling since 2001, particularly in the case of those attending public state universities. Nevertheless, the network of university institutions has kept expanding throughout, in a process that has not been adequately planned for. In view of the changing context, it is possible to identify a number of different symptoms that call for structural changes in the way in which the Spanish university system is organized. However, the vested interests of cities and regional governments introduce an important element of power that constrains any attempt to reorganize the spatial structure of the university system.
