description Introduction: breast cancer is a serious health problem and one of the leading causes of death worldwide. Objective: to identify the main risk factors for the onset of breast cancer and the level of knowledge about its early diagnosis  in women belonging to the Number 4- Clinic from the No. VII Health Area  in Cienfuegos, from  September 2017  to April 2018. Methods: descriptive observational cross-sectional study on a series of cases with a population of 70 women, where all of them were included. Socio-demographic variables, reproductive risk factors, sedentary lifestyle, pathological antecedents and other variables were studied; data were recorded in a form. Results: there are no noticeable differences between age groups or skin color; 22.9 % of women did not breastfeed, 42.9 % had an irregular menstrual cycle; 50 % of women who know about breast self-examination have a higher educational level, while 51 did not have a clinical breast examination. Conclusions: reproductive risk factors for breast cancer, related to an irregular menstrual cycle and a breastfeeding period less than six months, predominated. A high educational level was associated with a greater knowledge of breast self-examination by women.
