description Facet theory was used in the last 50 years as an alternative methodological approach to research. It stresses the relation between the theoretical and the empirical part of research. The paper reviews the basic concepts used in facet theory: definitional system, facet, facet elements (structs), mapping sentence, and structuples. Research steps are illustrated with an example which shows how a definitional system and a mapping sentence can be constructed. An introduction to similarity structure analysis shows how the correspondence hypothesis between the definitional system and the empirical structure of data can be tested. Possible reasons why facet theory is not used in research more often are discussed. The weaknesses of facet theory and its main advantages in relation to the regular exploratory research approach and methods are presented.
