description This article describes how Miguel de Cervantes appropriates of the image of the classic myth of Proteus and of the traditional character Pedro de Urdemalas in the construction of the protagonist of his play Pedro de Urdemalas. This composition allows the playwright to resignify both: the figure of the ancient Proteo and the image of folk Pedro in his comedy. In addition, the present study demonstrates that the proteic characteristic of the Cervante’s character is not restricted only to the ability to change the appearance but includes other peculiarities of the mythological Proteus. As far as the folkloric Pedro, it is shown that the character of Cervantes is very distant from the reference because the author rebuilds it by his way. Likewise it is evident that the mutable characteristics of Pedro are extend to the structure of dramatic text.
