description | Divided into three sections, this article deals with culture and songs of Dogon, a people from Mali, in West Africa. Starting from a trip on the Dogon Land, a collection of songs chanted by YaSegei, a Dagon woman living in the village of Begnemato, has been recorded, transcribed and translated in conjunction with bilingual native collaborators. The research procedures and the relationship between the researcher and her informers (singer, transcribers, translators) are commented on here. This research is still in progress and should be considered in the light of the polemical evolution of studies about Dogon, set forth by the expeditions and writings of ethnographer Marcel Griaule and his collaborators, the main lines of which are explained here. |
