The elderly seems to be one of the groups who require attention in any society, particularly in Iran. Of variables vital in the elderly on the account of their age period, one is thought to be death obsession. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the relationship between spiritual health and religious orientation with obsessive-compulsive disorder in the elderly by the mediating role of ambiguity tolerance. This study was descriptive of correlational type. The statistical population included the elderly living in Zanjan, Iran in 2017, among whom 250 were selected using convenience sampling method. Considering ethics and confidentiality policy, participants were asked to fill out Brief Mental Status, Palutzian and Elison’s Spiritual Health, McLean’s Ambiguity Tolerance, Abdul-Khaleq’s Death Obsession and Allport’s Religious Orientation questionnaires. Analyzed through descriptive and inferential statistics -Multiple Regression- were results which indicated that death obsession appears to have a negative relationship with religious health (-0.41), a negative relationship with internal religious orientation (-0.28) and a positive relationship with external religious orientation (0.15). Spiritual health and external religious orientation are likely to have an interpretational role in predicting death obsessive. Finally, the mediating role of ambiguity tolerance was confirmed. Hence, the results may be effective in understanding the elderly and their challenges and help directly in geriatric counseling. |
