description | With a starting point on historical analysis already carried out and consultation on primary sources, this article aims to narrate the story of the opening of the Amazon River to international trade and navigation. The hypothesis here explored is that to a significant extent, this process occurred under the influence of transnational actors, capable of promoting the adoption of a policy until then largely rejected by the Brazilian statesmen. According to the conclusions obtained, this hypothesis is confirmed. The topics here explored have the intention of giving light to the study of the history of the Brazilian foreign policy, the impact of non-state actors over it, and beyond that, today governmental politics concerning the internationalization of the Amazon Region. |
