Description
Summary:Cigarette smoking has long been suspected to be associated with a variety of oral conditions including dental caries. However, the association between habitual smoking with the caries incidence have to be further elucidated. The caries epidemiological data were reported significantly higher among smokers compared to non-smokers. Further, a retrospective study on the relationship between habitual cigarette smoking and specific pattern of dental decay has been reported that a specific type of decay occurs in term of form, location, and pathology. Although there are still controversial data, in the respect of oral hygiene, plaque index reported greater in smokers, while smokers showed decreased levels of salivary IgA, buffer capacity, and pH when compared with non-smokers. It can be concluded, there are relationship between smoking and the caries incidence indicated by several epidemiological data. However, further biomedical and studies on the influence of smoking on the caries development are still needed.
