description Taking up the conclusions of many previous works, this article underlines how the logic of matrimonial exchanges is organised everywhere in Western Europe by collaterals which renew former alliances. Patterns may become more complex depending on demographic situations; the system leaves wide choice to the actors. These mechanisms must be taken into account when studying economic, social and symbolic transactions in order to understand their causes and purposes. Land purchases and sales often "stick" very closely to kinship and alliance networks. Some forms of alliance open up new strategic possibilities. The texts written in the 17th and 18th centuries underline how "marriages by exchange" (exchange of sisters), accompanied by subrogations (adoptions) make it possible to circumvent both the right of formariage and the right of mainmort; they date the appearance of the exchange of sisters from the 11th and 13th centuries. Same-sex or opposite-sex marriages between first cousins, frequent during the 13th-18th centuries, established themselves as fundamental actors in trade. They gradually disappeared during the 19th century.
