description Using the line x tester analysis, we studied combining ability, gene effects and mode of inheritance of number of spikelets per spike, grain weight perspike and harvest index, using 5 lines, 3 testers and 15 hybrids of wheat. The results of the study show that nonadditive genes play the most important role in the inheritance of grain weight per spike and harvest index. Additive gene effects have been found to be more important than nonadditive ones in the inheritance of number of spikelets per spike. The mode of inheritance of characters under study depended on the cross combination and the year of growing. In most cases the mode of inheritance was dominant. On the basis of GCA and SCA, for all analyzed characters, it can be concluded that the best general combiner was the line NS 31/96. NS 31/96 x Tiha and Madison x Florida were the most prospective combinations for the development of new, high yielding wheat genotypes. .
