description Climate regulation is one of the environmental services affected by the urbanization process. Changes are generated that modify the regional climate, producing an urban climate with negative socio-environmental consequences. The UN (2017) proposes the goals of sustainable development, which emphasize the need to have sustainable cities. The urban climate represents a challenge to achieve the desired sustainability. This work analyzes studies on the urban climate in metropolises in Mexico, to demonstrate the complexity of reaching sustainable cities according to the climate approach. A review of scientific articles was carried out to identify the number of studies per metropolitan area, the methodological characteristics and the type of analysis performed. Subsequently, the main reasons for having cities with a sustainable climate in Mexico were identified. The results reveal that only 13.5% of the 74 metropolises have any study related to the urban climate. 80% of them are focused on observational studies, 20% correspond to correlational and / or predictive analyzes. No work describes direct participation in public policies. The theme of urban climate is incipient in Mexico, therefore, reaching the category of sustainable cities represents a challenge for public policy, since whenever the negative impacts are not reduced, the population will not reach the desired quality of life.
