Summary:Based on testimonies of builders and drivers of ox carts, this article discusses the ethos of the ox cart in the backlands of Alagoas State and the social relations established around it. We discuss the process of resignification that seeks to resist the conditions that lead to the disappearance of the practice. The first part of this article approaching the profession of builder in the workshops, emphasizing the constituent parts of the car and the difficulty in acquiring the necessary raw material for this activity. Next, we approach the profession of driver, the animal control techniques and the uses of the ox cart for locomotion and transportation of cargo. Then, we approached the ox cart as protagonist in the celebrations, masses and parades that occur in municipalities of the backwoods of Alagoas. Finally, we address the relationship between tradition and popular culture. The data and photographs in this article represent a very small part of the whole material collected for the research called: Project for the Safeguarding of Intangible Heritage in Alagoas conducted between 2015, 2016 and 2017. The methodology applied is the National Inventory of References Cultural / INRC, methodology used by the National Historical and Artistic Heritage Institute / IPHAN. The interviews were conducted to fill INRC forms and the photographs to register the contacts. The material collected resulted in the elaboration of the Alagoas Cultural Mapping
