Description
Summary:This article studies in detail an extract from Wolf Solent (1929) by John Cowper Powys — an extract in which affects play a prominent part — so as to show that even though the novelist is not said to have belonged to the modernist movement, he was aware of and interested in the issues raised by modernism. What is at stake in this particular case is the question of feminine writing as it was formulated by Virginia Woolf or Dorothy Richardson. In fact the wider implications of the passage will be better understood if the extract is seen as an example of the conversation that went on between Powys and Richardson. Besides, although the article focuses on the issue of feminine writing, Christie’s text invites the reader to go beyond any fixed positions, thus avoiding the pitfalls inherent in the question.
