Description
Summary:6 voices in 10 minutes: Psychosocial aspects and the elderly Depression in diabetes mellitus Mellitus diabetes (MD) and Depression are considered a problem within Public Health. Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a disease that affects one out of five adults over 65 years old. Diabetes increases the risks of depression by 1.5-2 times. Depression is the most frequent affective disorder within the elderly. It is underdiagnosed and treated. The prevalence of depression in people with diabetes is between 15% and 40%. The DECOYDI studycarried out by the SAD Hypertension Committee included 427 patients with T2D and 315 controls ≥ 65 years old, HbA1c 7.15±3%, duration of T2D 11.78±9.17 years; the frequency of depression was 18.2% vs. 12.4% (p<0.03), respectively. An 11% of the patients with T2D had a previous diagnosis of depression and an 89% was diagnosed with the Geriatric Depression Scale of Yesavage. Risk factors for depression were T2D (2.05 of the times), female gender, family history of depression and age>75; and the protective factor, physical activity.
